Empowering the next generation at our IT summer camp

Judgemeadow Community College was transformed into a hub of technological innovation over the summer holidays, as we organised an exciting two-week summer IT camp.

Hosted by Jaz Bola – our Head of Computing – we welcomed pupils from local primary schools – including Whitehall Primary School, Launde Primary School, Thurnby Mead Primary School, and even King’s College, Wimbledon, and provided them with a unique opportunity to enhance their IT skills.

The camp was designed to inspire and equip students with essential digital skills, focusing on practical, hands-on learning in a supportive environment.

There was a unit on graphics manipulation - where they learnt how to design logos and edit photos – and Microsoft Office – focusing on Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

The highlight for many, though, was the introduction to block programming. Under Mr Bola’s guidance, students took their first steps into the world of coding using intuitive, visual block programming platforms. This approach made learning to code accessible and fun, allowing students to create their own games, animations, and interactive stories without needing to write complex code.

Parents immediately noticed the impact of the IT Summer Camp at Judgemeadow Community College. Each day, the children returned home excited to share what they had learned. Whether it was a new coding trick, a digital art project, or a skill they mastered in Microsoft Office, the camp provided an engaging, supportive environment where children from various schools could explore their interests in technology and beyond.

It was more than just a holiday activity; it was seen as an investment in our children’s futures.
